Every birthday starts with the same question at the kitchen table: who's coming? The guest list shapes everything after it. It decides which places can fit your group, what the party costs and how loud the afternoon gets. Here's how Ottawa parents usually decide at each age, and what we think about inviting the whole class.

A handy rule of thumb: invite one more friend than your child's age. For a 6-year-old, that means 7 friends. It isn't a hard rule, but it keeps little ones from getting overwhelmed and keeps parties for older kids easier to manage.

How many kids, by age

AgeUsual groupGood to know
1 to 2Family and 2 to 4 little friendsAt this age the party is mostly for the grown-ups. Plan around naps and keep it to about an hour.
3 to 44 to 6 kidsParents usually stay. One simple activity and some food is plenty, and about 90 minutes is long enough.
5 to 66 to 10 kidsThis is when many parents start inviting the whole class, and party places start to make sense.
7 to 98 to 12 kids, or the whole classThese are the busiest party years. Active places and themed parties both go over well.
10 to 126 to 10 close friendsParties get smaller and more grown-up. Think escape rooms, laser tag, a cooking class or a sleepover.
13 and up4 to 8 friendsYour teen will usually want to choose. Expect fewer guests and a bigger outing.

If you're looking for places that suit a certain age, our guide by age lists them.

Should you invite the whole class?

If your child is in kindergarten to grade 3 and the invitations go out at school, inviting everyone is the kind thing to do. Some schools even ask for it, because kids notice who got an envelope and who didn't. It also means you don't have to avoid talking about the party with other parents at pickup. If you'd rather keep it small, that's fine too. Just send the invitations to parents directly instead of through the classroom.

A whole-class party usually means 20 to 26 kids. That rules out a lot of party rooms, so check how many kids a place can take before you look at anything else. In Ottawa, a party for 24 kids typically costs about $609. A party for 12 kids usually costs about $345.

Some Ottawa places are big enough for the whole class. You can also rent a room for under $80 an hour and run the party yourself. That's often the cheapest way to host 25 kids.

Questions parents often ask

What about daycare friends?

For a 2 or 3-year-old, daycare friends are their friends. Invite the handful your child actually talks about at pickup rather than the whole room.

Should siblings come?

Say on the invitation whether siblings are welcome. Many venues count every child in the room, and a few extra siblings can push you into a bigger package.

Should parents drop off or stay?

Most parents stay for parties until about age 5 and start dropping off around 6 or 7. Say which you expect on the invitation. If the kids are young, check whether the venue asks for a certain number of adults for each group of children.

How many will actually come?

Plan on most of your guest list saying yes. Weekend parties during the school year tend to fill up. Summer and long-weekend dates get more regrets, because plenty of Ottawa families head to the cottage.

What the number changes

Many places price a package for a set number of kids, often 10 or 12, and then charge for each extra child. Before you book, work out the total for your whole guest list. A few extra kids can change which place is the better deal.

Once your list is ready, here's what to write on the invitation.

Questions parents ask

How many kids should I invite to a birthday party?

A common rule is to invite one more friend than your child's age. That means 5 friends for a 4-year-old and 7 for a 6-year-old. From about age 5 to 8, many parents invite the whole class instead.

Do I have to invite the whole class?

If invitations are handed out at school, inviting everyone is the kindest choice, and some schools ask for it. If you'd like a smaller party, send the invitations to parents directly rather than through the classroom.

How much does a whole-class birthday party cost in Ottawa?

A party for 24 kids at an Ottawa party place typically costs about $609. Renting a community centre room and running the party yourself usually costs less.

At what age can I drop my child off at a birthday party?

Most parents stay for parties until about age 5 and start dropping off around 6 or 7. Say which you expect on the invitation.
