About renting a party room in Ottawa

Renting a room is the do-it-yourself option. You get a clean, empty space for a couple of hours, and the party is whatever you make it: your own games, your own food, maybe an entertainer. City of Ottawa community centres are often the cheapest way to host a big group, at around $60 an hour for most rooms, and plenty of studios and halls rent their rooms out too.

A few things to check before you book:

  • Count setup and cleanup in your time. The clock usually starts when you walk in, so book an extra half hour on each end if you're decorating.
  • Ask what's in the room, and how to get to it. Tables and chairs are usually included, but they're often stacked in a locked closet, and a kitchen, fridge or sound system isn't always available. Find out who has the key and where everything is kept, so you're not running around five minutes before the guests arrive.
  • Read the rules on decorations. Many rooms don't allow tape on the walls, confetti or open flames, so check before you buy candles and streamers.
  • Ask about food and drinks. Some rooms let you bring anything, and others have their own caterer or limit outside food.
